Sir Ridley Scott talks a life in film and his cinematic approach to winemaking for Tempus

The new issue of Tempus Magazine is here, and stars filmmaker Sir Ridley Scott for his family wine estate, Mas des Infermières. In my exclusive interview with the prolific director – who will release Gladiator II in cinemas in November – Ridley shares the story behind his Luberon vineyard, how his film career has shaped a lifelong love of food and wine, and why his skills as a director have been paramount to the brand’s success.

The journey of this exclusive cover story started in December 2023, when Mas des Infermières launched in the UK with a glamorous fine dining event at 1 Hotel Mayfair. In February, I travelled to the Vinexpo Paris wine fair to interview Ridley in person. Our 30 minutes conversation was an absolute delight, sharing stories of his career, background and passion for farming – and I was very touched when he shared some personal advice for me as our conversations wrapped up.

In the interview, which is available in the summer edition of Tempus Magazine, Ridley also reflected on his 40+ year career in film, his approach to handling film and wine critics, and why his famed on-set efficiency stems from a competitive nature.

“[Winemaking] is like making a movie: once you’re in, you’re in deep. Up to your nose in challenges. It’s exactly the same with wine,” he said. “We’re all about quality. The competition is enormous; so many people make wine. But there are so many films now, and I’m still surviving after 40 years. I released Napoleon [in 2023] and I’m delivering Gladiator II in November. So, I just ignore [the competition] and focus on the wine.”

Sir Ridley is just one of many inspirational personalities and brands that feature in Tempus’s motivational summer edition. Spotlight actor and cocktail connoisseur Stanley Tucci talks London’s food scene; Coldplay bassist Guy Berryman tells us about the joys and challenges of running his clothing label, Applied Art Forms; superstar sommelier Henna Zinzuwadia shares her mission to diversify the fine wine industry; and Chaumet CEO Charles Leung reflects on his first months at the helm of one of the world’s most influential haute jewellery brands.

What’s more, Tempus puts the spotlight on the stars of theOlympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024, explores the next giant leap for space tourism, explores the power of regenerative travel at Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Island, and much more.
